Bell-ans artists-in-residence and fine art photographers, Tom Artin and Chris Dei, share their images of the natural world, celebrating the beauty of flowers and trees, and the majestic wildlife of Africa. The artists, both masters in their respective fields, have exhibited worldwide, and through this exhibition will share their work together for the first time.

TOM ARTINTom Artin is a photographer and musician living in Rockland County, New York. His subjects range from landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes to portraits, florals and still lifes. His work is simple, straightforward and painterly. His eye for composition and understanding of the subject is matched by his attention to detail and craft. Artin began taking, developing and printing images in the early 1950s. Artin's photographs are black and white and exploit the broad range of tonality and subtlety that medium affords. The majority of his photographs originate as medium format images shot on film with vintage Rolleiflexes and a Hasselblad, though he also works with 4"x5" and 8"x10" view cameras. In recent years, he has added digital cameras to his toolbox for certain applications. Artin continues to print in the traditional chemical darkroom. In the digital lightroom, he processes images scanned from negatives and transparencies in Photoshop, and prints onto water-color type papers via Conetech Piezography, a quad-tone digital black and white printing process developed for the Epson inkjet printers. In the 1950's Artin outfitted his own dedicated dark-room at home, and devoted his high school senior chemistry project to the chemistry of photography, which included fabricating and printing on his own photographic paper. His photographic career ran in parallel with a career as medieval scholar and college teacher which he left in 1979 to pursue a full-time career as a jazz musician. In recent decades, Artin's work has been primarily in the fine-art category, though he has done fashion and music photography for print and for websites. Artin continues to travel around the world capturing light-rich studies of people and places; his studio, in the Bel-Ans center in Rockland County, serves also as his lightroom. He is currently on the roster of Bruce McGaw Graphic's artists, creating images for fine art posters sold around the world. The florals currently offered by Ned Kelly & Co. were photographed with a Hasselblad on Agfa Scala (black and white transparency) film, processed in Photoshop, then printed via Piezography on an Epson 3000 ink-jet printer, using archival inks. The quad-tone process employs four varying intensities of black ink (replacing the conventional four colors) in order to achieve a nearly continuous and very broad tonal range. Printed on Hahnemühle William Turner archival paper, the photographs are matted in 100% cotton rag board, and framed in brushed aluminum Halbe frames.

CHRIS DEIChris is an award winning fine art photographer whose tribal and wildlife images echo the startling beauty of a disappearing world. Whether an intimate encounter with the wild eyes of a lion, or a sweeping shot of white wings and storm drenched skies, each work is a doorway into the simultaneous vitality and mystery of vast and magical lands. Her signature sepia tones and old world touch transport us into a time where nature’s balance and perfection were as yet unmarred. One of the few fine art wildlife photographers in the world today, Chris’ work lifts the art of wildlife photography to new heights; she has created a portal back in time, a haunting entry point into the timelessness of nature. When standing before one of Chris’ limited edition handmade prints, it is virtually impossible to tell if it was shot at the turn of the century or in this modern age. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US, Europe and Africa, and is featured in the permanent art collection of The Bennington Center for the Arts, the Herlufsholm in Denmark, and can also be found in private collections on four continents. She consistently places in the most prestigious wildlife competition in the world, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition, held annually in London. Her work in Kenya and Tanzania continues to receive international attention and wide critical acclaim.

What lies behind the eyes? Such a surprise is the spirit. That star that shines from deep inside, yearning for a chance. A plug to stick into the electric current, the power within… To connect to all that’s ever been. We can all be stars.

What is our potential and how do we discover the light we are born with and allow it to shine? This is a question that I have been living with while preparing for this exhibit. As I get older I become more aware of the impermanence of life and the thought that when I look back at the end of life what would I regret? I would regret not giving it all I have, not being fully who I can be. This is what this is all about to me. This is my greatest inspiration. Who are we? Can we make the commitment to fully embody ourselves? It takes courage to be who we are, but taking the leap brings us to life. Taking the leap into the darkness requires faith. Stars show us the way and that light glows from within.

In this time of transition, what is the identity of the contemporary male artist? How does this narrative fit into the shifting societal landscape? Antiquated gender expectations have
destabilized; clichés and stereotypes are being questioned; awareness and diversity are progressing.

Volition Gallery presents a provocative exhibition of eleven male artists telling personal stories about breaking the boundaries of gender roles and dispelling toxic societal narratives. In a moment when women are coming forward to tell their own accounts of abuse, this exhibition offers a different facet of the conversation.

How do we acknowledge these powerful accounts of trauma without erasing the stories of others? By opening up this dialogue, the works in this show aim to reveal the personal and vulnerable reactions that these male artists have experienced in their own lives. The artists come from a multitude of backgrounds and experiences and the artwork reflects this diversity while being united in its deeply human and personal stories.

Unmasked is an attempt to remove the hateful narrative that all men are toxic in their masculinity and asks: What is a “good” man in today’s landscape? And what are these “good” men telling us in their artwork?
